Toyota Camry’s History
Since it first arrived in South Florida and in Miami during the 1980s, Toyota Camry has been providing reliable and affordable transportation to its drivers. This car’s history is a bit different from its beginnings.
The Early Years
The Toyota Camry was first introduced in the U.S. market in 1983. It was produced at the company’s plant in Toyota’s Tsutsumi facility. The car was powered by a 2.0L four-cylinder engine that produced 92 horsepower. Other features of the car included MacPherson struts and a rack and pinion steering system.
The first generation of Toyota’s popular car was built on the same platform as the company’s other cars. It was intended to be a utilitarian model. Despite the minor changes introduced during the first generation, it gained popularity due to its affordability and reliability.
Second Generation
The first major overhaul of the Toyota Camry was carried out in 1986. It was introduced in 1987 as the first generation of the car to be offered with wagon and sedan body styles. The new model was powered by a 2.0L four-cylinder engine that was able to produce 115 horsepower.
In 1988, the Toyota Camry received a major update. It was equipped with a new 2.5L 24-valve V6 engine that was able to produce 153 horsepower. This new engine was capable of sending power to the All-Trac system.
Third Generation
The updated Toyota Camry was first introduced in 1992 as a true midsize car. It was equipped with a new 2.2L four-cylinder engine that was capable of producing 130 horsepower. It was also equipped with a 3.0L V6 engine that was capable of producing 175 horsepower. Safety features such as an anti-lock brake system and a side airbag were added to the car.
Toyota introduced a two-door version of the Toyota Camry in 1994 in an attempt to challenge the Honda Accord. The new model was also equipped with a passenger side air bag.
Fourth Generation
The 1997 model year marked the beginning of the fourth generation of the Toyota Camry. It was equipped with a new 2.2L four-cylinder engine that was capable of producing 133 horsepower. The V6 was also upgraded to produce 194 horsepower. As a result, the car became more aerodynamic and angular.
In 2001, the Toyota Camry was able to gain various creature comforts. These included a CD player, a standard stereo, and leather-wrapped steering wheel. Other features such as wood-like trim and chrome accents were also added to the car.
Fifth Generation
The 2002 model year marked the beginning of the next generation of the Toyota Camry. It was equipped with a new four-cylinder engine that was capable of producing 157 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque.
In 2004, the Toyota Camry received a boost in performance thanks to the addition of a new 3.3L V6 engine. It was capable of producing 225 horsepower and 220 lb-ft of power. A special Limited Edition model was also introduced. The new model featured a sleek front grill and fog lamps.
Sixth Generation
The sixth generation of the Toyota Camry was unveiled at the 2006 North American International Auto Show. It was equipped with a hybrid version and a 3.5L V6 engine that was capable of producing 268 horsepower.
In 2010, the Toyota Camry was able to gain traction control as standard equipment. It was also equipped with a new four-cylinder engine that was capable of producing 169 horsepower.
Current Generation
The 2011 Toyota Camry was more fuel-efficient due to various factors. Some of these included its aerodynamic design and low rolling-resistance tires. It was able to achieve an EPA-estimated 35 miles per gallon.
In 2017, the Toyota Camry was equipped with numerous high-tech features. Some of these included a wireless charging station for smartphones, an Entune infotainment system, and safety features.
The 2018 model year marked the beginning of the next generation of the Toyota Camry. It was equipped with a new exterior and interior design.
